Water Elemental

Let’s face it; you probably became an artist because you have visual ideas bursting inside you:  Why wait to share them with the world?  What you really need most is a nurturing mentor with a track record of realized, enchanting images, who creates a safe, judgment-free workspace where you can loosen up, have fun and play.  Award-winning artist and illustrator Christine Mitzuk builds such a positive, relaxed environment whenever she teaches a class.  Her warm spirit will help you bring your most precious and inspired thoughts to artistic fruition.

Explore your creativity by developing an imaginative picture based upon an existing story that you select, or an idea that you originate. Work at your own pace to learn the time-honored steps of the creative, visual process – from idea generation, through preparatory work, to completed project. Emphasis will be placed on storytelling through composition and character development, as well as how color theory enhances visual communication. Students choose to work in the medium with which they are comfortable. Christine has experience to support watercolor, colored pencil, pen and ink, or oils.

This class is held at The Art Academy, LLC in St. Paul, MN. It's conveniently located on Snelling Avenue.

Starting WEDNESDAY April 5,  8-9:30 PM, 8 weeks

12"x16" prints of the four elementals matted and framed and hanging on a wall at lodestone coffee and gamesGaming + Coffee + Art!

Starting this week some of my art will be on display at Lodestone Coffee and Games in Minnetonka, MN. Currently NEW large versions of the four elementals are available for viewing and purchase.

For this new limited edition print run of the elementals, I've made them about 12"x16". There will be 5 artist proofs, and 10 prints in the run for a total of 15 prints at this size. Each is printed on archival paper with archival inks. For the show the pieces are matted and framed to fit 16"x20" frames (outer dimensions are slightly larger). These pieces at this 12"x16" size will only be available at select shows, not online. Fear not, the 8"x10" limited edition prints are currently still available.

Lodestone Coffee and Games is a fun shop with a variety of games to purchase or try out. Plus they host gaming events. Check them out here http://www.lodestonecoffeeandgames.com/.

Lines for study of "Milkmaids, Novella" 1962, by Nikolai Nikolaevich Baskakov
Lines for study of "Milkmaids, Novella" 1962, by Nikolai Nikolaevich Baskakov

Doing a study of a masterwork can be a great way to learn. I have been in awe of the handling of color and value of many of the paintings on display at The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis, MN so was thrilled to receive permission to do a study there. To get the most of the experience I applied some advice a teacher/mentor gave me to this museum study: go with a question you want answered. My question or goal: To better understand how to handle value and color. How did a lot of the Russian Realist painters paint with value and color so masterfully?

For the time available to me, I could choose only one painting for study (to clarify, my time was not limited by the museum but by other factors). I requested permission to study the painting “Milkmaids, Novella” 1962, by Nikolai Nikolaevich Baskakov 1918-1993. So my question became, “how did he handle the values and colors in this painting?”

Another mentor suggested that I draw or trace the masterwork I'll be studying BEFORE I go to the museum. If I were to draw on site I would have spent several extra days on just getting the drawing correct. By preparing the drawing before I went to the museum, I could use my limited time to really focus on exploring that main goal of better understanding value and color.

I did two studies, one just focusing on the relationships of the values so I painted it in grayscale. Then I did a second in color. One of the challenges was that the original piece must be nearly 8'x4', and my studies were merely a fraction of that. I wasn't going to be able to get all the blending and nuanced color and value changes. Instead, for the grayscale version I focused on the relationships of the values, and the large value shapes. For the color version I focused on the color relationships (their hue, temperature, value, and chroma). A lot of the color in the original was created by overlapping strokes, or strokes with multiple colors in them so my version was more a study of the larger impression or appearance.

Note: This was an excellent learning experience! I would like to give special thanks to The Museum of Russian Art and the head curator, Masha Zavialova, Ph.D., for allowing me to do this study.

Our first model will be a woman who studied ballet for over 13 years. We don't know what pose she'll hold yet but she's exceptionally graceful so it'll be a good one.

This will be our first model though the pose will be different for the class. It was her suggestion for the ballet attire (she studied for over 13 years). I can't help but think of Degas!
