My Rainy Day Dragon drawing was jurried into the “Not So Tiny Dragons” book. In celebration of this and the Kickstarter I’m excited to share with you folks a peek at much of the path I took to create this drawing (which also became a painting).

The Making of a (Not so ) Tiny Dragon

Here are some pages of my brainstorming. I explored in word lists different ways “tiny” could be interpreted and what visual cues might help with scale. I also toyed with the idea of TINY being an acronym of some sort (that’s still on the table for a future project). For one of these ideas I had to research different the look of different boats. This is generally how I work: a combination of word brainstorming, small rough sketches, and research.

While doing some brainstorming and daydreaming on the ride down to Gen Con last August, I came up with the idea of a little dragon getting dripped on from a wet leaf. That ended up being a little dragon huddled under some leaves on a rainy day. This idea stuck because of part of Jon’s instructions in the call for art “…Just have fun and make it really cool…” Having this mindset helped me decide what I wanted to see and what I though was fun.

Next week, the larger sketch.

  • It’s MAGNIFICENT!! He looks nice and cozy under that leafy shelter. I’m sure it took the little guy a really long time to find such a nice spot to spend such a long day in the rain. It’s a good thing, because living in that part of the planet, the torrential downpours create those gigantic drip drops which could knock the best of out cold. Luckily the little one has a nice natural internal furnace for warmth and two effective nostrils for venting the steam. It’s so WONDERFUL Christine!!! Joe-Peter Sullivan
