Winter-Spring Classes 2024

Winter-Spring 2024

I teach at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art in Minneapolis, MN. This Winter-Spring term I will be teaching three classes as part of The Atelier’s Part-Time Program: Gestural Figure Study; Color 2, Exploring Color; and Imaginative Art & Illustration, AND a NEW Photo Reference Workshop. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Currently I’m planning to NOT hold classes the week of March 25. This follows The Atelier’s holiday break schedule for the Full-Time Program, because I also teach in the full-time program. This may change if we need to do any make up classes. Other instructors may do this differently. Check with your instructor.

NEW Photo Reference Workshop

With David Ginsberg and Christine Mitzuk

How DO they do that?! Are you uncertain, or do you have questions about how to create a picture of things that don’t exist? This could be a posthumous portrait, a picture of something historical, or something completely fictional. You know you need references but don’t know what to do.

In this workshop, we’ll share information, tips, and tricks about how to know what kind and how much reference you need, pictorial as well as legal considerations, what kind of reference is available to artists, and ways to shoot your own reference by either working with a photographer who has the ideal gear, or using what you have available if you have budget and/or time constraints. Come with questions!

On Friday there will be a presentation and demonstration at The Atelier. For attendees taking the full workshop, please come with rough sketches. Please be prepared to stay past 4PM so we may talk with you about your sketches so you have an idea of what you’ll need to prepare for the rest of the workshop. Please consider these things: any special clothing or costuming you may need; what is the setting, time of day, indoor or outdoor lighting; props that may be needed to fill in your sketch. If need be, you are welcome to bring a friend or hire your own model for the photo studio portion of the workshop, otherwise we will rely on fellow attendees or yourself to model for photo reference.

On Saturday and Sunday, the hands-on portion will be at David’s photography studio. During the hands-on portion, attendees will get to capture reference based on their sketches.

Costumed Figure Drawing and Painting

Join me for another fun round of melding observation and imagination in learning about the clothed figure. In this class we will explore ways to portray clothed figures and different materials. Learn about underlying anatomy, characteristics of fabrics and folds, and how to be selective to design folds to serve your picture.

In this class we will explore how to portray clothed figures and different materials. Learn about underlying anatomy, characteristics of fabrics and folds, and how to select folds from nature to serve the picture. The costuming will be a little unrefined to show you a budget-friendly way of how to use what’s available to then design and create what you want to see in your drawing or painting. Knowing these things can help you draw and paint clothing and costuming that doesn’t actually exist.

This 14-week class will be broken into three segments, each with a different costume and pose. In segment one we’ll use one class to draw the nude model to familiarize ourselves with essential anatomical landmarks. Then we will work with the same pose but with the model in costume. For the remaining two segments (4 weeks each), we will start immediately with the clothed model. Using the sight-size method, students will develop a minimum of 3 costumed figure studies. Depending on experience, students are welcome to work in pencil, charcoal, or oil paint.

Color 2: Exploring Color

In-person at The Atelier Deepen your understanding of color and put color theory to practical use. Learn ways to alter chroma, the relative nature of color, color harmony, simultaneous contrast, and more through a combination of presentations, demonstrations, and assignments. Assignments will include color mixing exercises and painting studies from still-life objects and master works. Color I or a basic understanding of hue, value and chroma are strongly recommended. We will be using the Paxton Palette in oil paint.

Additional Thoughts: You do NOT need to be proficient with hue, value, chroma, and temperature. If you have a vague idea of what those things are, great! I do demos, I coach people with ways to navigate mixing color. We’ll be doing many different little still life studies so come with a willingness to explore.

Hybrid in-person/online (students may attend class by Zoom OR in-person at The Atelier) Explore your imagination! In this class you will be coached through the imaginative art making process used by many artists for personal and professional commission work: idea generation, preparatory work (sketches and value design, reference, and color studies), and on to a final picture. Emphasis is placed on intent, and visual narrative. Christine’s teaching is tailored to the needs of each student… Read the full description here.
